SELF CHECKOUT IN RETAIL – MEASURING THE LOSS – WEBINAR

This webinar presented the research findings from a comprehensive report that assessed the potential impact of self-checkout (SCO) technologies on retail loss. The report provided best practices and guidance on how to address and balance these risks. The webinar will included an introduction from Colin Peacock, Group Strategy Coordinator for the ECR Community Shrink & OSA Group, a presentation of the report itself from Professor Adrian Beck, and finally, an overview of the latest SCO trends and technology innovations from Kalyna Stiles, Global Retail Solutions leader, NCR.

Following the insightful presentations, the webinar transitioned into a deep dive into the specifics of the report’s findings. Professor Adrian Beck elaborated on the nuanced ways in which self-checkout technologies contribute to retail shrinkage, but also highlighted the operational efficiencies and customer satisfaction improvements they can bring when implemented with strategic oversight. He emphasized the importance of training staff to support customers using SCO systems and the deployment of technology-based deterrence measures to minimize losses.

Kalyna Stiles then took the stage to discuss the cutting-edge advancements in SCO technology. She detailed how artificial intelligence and machine learning are being harnessed to improve the accuracy of item recognition and reduce the opportunity for intentional and accidental mis-scanning. Kalyna also showcased how mobile scanning and payment technologies are integrating with traditional SCO systems to offer a seamless and frictionless shopping experience, further enhancing customer satisfaction and loyalty.

The webinar concluded with a Q&A session where attendees had the opportunity to ask questions directly to the speakers. Key themes from this session included inquiries about the balance between loss prevention and customer experience, the role of employee engagement in successful SCO implementation, and the future trajectory of SCO technologies in retail. Colin Peacock wrapped up the event by emphasizing the ECR Community’s commitment to fostering collaboration between retailers and technology providers to address the challenges of retail loss and enhance overall store performance. He also mentioned the availability of further resources and workshops for ECR Community members interested in exploring SCO technologies and their impact on retail operations in more depth.
