In this article, based upon research co-funded by ECR and RILA, Professor Adrian Beck looks beyond shrinkage to define a broader view of loss, entitled Total Retail Loss, that captures the full extent of losses across entire retail organisations. In those business that have looked to embrace this approach, total retail losses are typically found to be 5-14 times higher than their original shrinkage number.
